402 Employment & Training Program

 United Migrant Opportunity Services

Ms. Anna Garcia and family arrived in Wisconsin in March of 2000 from the state of Washington where they had been doing migrant work. With no money, work or a place to stay, they went to live with some relatives.

After a one month of living with their relatives in a very crowded condition, she decided to visit UMOS for assistance with rent and other supportive services. UMOS enrolled her in the 402 Employment and Training program and provided a first month rent, food and gas vouchers and also referrals to jobs. Mr. Reyes Garcia found employment at Quad-Graphics in Lomira, WI where he is presently working. Anna got a temporary job at Chiquita Food Processing in Oakfield, WI, filling out orders.

Anna has office skills and is a people’s person and wanted a job with UMOS, so she was referred to the UMOS Child Care Regional Office in Oshkosh, WI to apply for a job. She was told that she was not qualified for the position that she had applied for.

Anna's case manager continued to look for a position for her. Shortly a position became available at New Contracting as a recruiter. She enjoys her job because she likes working with people and computers, at last she has work that she had always wanted to do and with UMOS's help she feels that they have accomplished quite a lot. They can now count on their job security and fringe benefits.
